300,000+ New Fathers Given Pocket Guide to Fatherhood Through Government-Sponsored Program
Breaking News: More than 300,000 new fathers in the UK can now pull out reach in their wallets and pull out their handy-dandy DAD CARDS. That’s right, the government there has sponsored a program to provide new dads with a pocket guide to fatherhood! Sound interesting? Keep reading…
News dads in the UK are being given credit-card sized guides to fatherhood as part of a government-sponsored program, as long as they attend the births of their children (midwives are giving out the cards). I think this is potentially a terrific idea, as long as it contains the right messages. Based on what I’ve read so far, the jury is still out.
Apparently there is a fair amount of parenting buzz (and debate) taking place in the UK over whether or not this is a good idea. Read about it yourself in these two articles about the new daddy cards. The first one seems to support the idea, while the second one seems to think these cards are a waste. You be the judge:
- NHS launches pocket ‘How to be a dad’ guide to fatherhood
- Every new dad to be given ‘Dad Card’ guide to parenting
Hmmm… Maybe I should create a dad card and market it to hospitals in the U.S. (starting with the ones here in North Carolina). Then I can become a millionaire stay-home dad and spend all day playing with my daughter and writing witty daddy blog posts when she takes her naps.
I would love to hear your opinion.
Should new fathers in the United States receive a Dad Card, too?
If so, should it be a government-sponsored program or should a private company rise up and take charge of a U.S. daddy card initiative?
If you think dad cards are a terrible idea, why do you feel that way?
I welcome your comments, as always.

This wouold be one where the jury is still out. After distribution, if it helps some people I think it would have been a great thing. After all, what could it hurt? Maybe it would serve as a little nudge to some –maybe a helpful reminder needed by some that they are “a card carrying Daddy” .

i still think you need to work on that idea you came up with between now and Father’s Day.
