Pumpkin 101
Pumpkins come in all shapes and sizes, as described in terrific detail in a blog post called Picking the Right Pumpkin. My preference has always been for what this post refers to as the “orange and smooth” variety.
That’s why when I picked up Breanna from daycare the other day and was pleasantly surprized to see a display of pumpkins from a local pumpkin patch by the front door of the building, I just knew Bre was going to flip the script.
As I strolled around the display (with Breanna’s tiny hand wrapped around my pinky finger) and chatted with the woman selling the Halloween orbs, one particular pumpkin caught my eye. It’s what the aforementioned blog post refers to as the “Ew, Gross” type of pumpkin. I thought to myself…
That’s it. That’s the one she is going to pick. It’s not symmetrical (which her mommy likes), and it’s not the perfect shade of orange with no abnormalities (as are the ones I like). No doubt. She’s going to pick that one.
We circled and circled the display, as Bre checked out each one with the careful, steady eye of a surgeon. Sure enough, when she lifted her gaze to the upper tiers of the pile of pumpkins, her eyes locked on the one that was different. The one that stood out from all the rest.
Which pumpkin do you want, Bre-Bre? Do you see one you want to take home? (as if I even had to ask)
Her stare was locked-on-target like a heat-seeking missle. Up shot her arm, and her tiny index finger indicated her Halloween decoration of choice:
That one, Daddy! I want THAT ONE! Can I have that one please Daddy?
With a wide Daddy grin I told her she could, and I gave her a few dollars to hand to the nice lady from the pumpkin patch. Now that it’s home, I actually like this pumpkin better than the smooth orange ones that I usually get.
From this year forward, Breezy gets to pick the pumpkins for our house. After all, she’s got great taste. And there’s nothing wrong with being a little different.
What kind of pumpkins do YOU and YOUR KIDS like?
